I’ve posted a number of things on Facebook about the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, including a mock press release and an article from Al Franken. However, I think this piece from Worldchanging on why they HAVEN’T covered the oil spill is possibly the most important yet. While the most visually arresting disasters get the most press, there are certainly far worse problems facing humanity and our planet today, and by focusing on one specific situation like the BP oil spill, it sends a message to the public ‘hey, this is really bad, but we’ll fix it and then the earth will be happy again’. Not true. There will still be mountain top removal to produce coal, plastic islands the size of Rhode Island, desertification (of both land and sea), and, as always, climate change and the myriad resulting disasters.
So let’s focus on the systemic problems. Yes, the BP oil spill is horrible, especially if you’re a sea bird, but there are more deeply rooted struggles to confront, and we need to be willing to change our lifestyles to do so.
